In February, 2021, one of the world’s worst oil spills left the Mediterranean coastline covered in thick black tar.

The disastrous spill ravaged the surrounding area, devastating the wildlife there — including the endangered green sea turtle.

Faced with turtles covered in tar, a local sea turtle rescue center turned to the unique treatment method of feeding them mayonnaise.

Surprisingly, this popular condiment has been used as a safe and effective means to clean sea turtles before.

The properties of mayonnaise break down the oil, helping make the tar thinner, and thus making it easier to flush out the turtles’ digestive tracts.

The tar becomes less sticky and exits the turtles’ bodies, just like how dish soap removes grease on dishes.

Thanks to these innovative rescuers, the turtles were able to reach full recovery in a few weeks’ time.
