Have you ever had a song stuck in your head, wishing it weren’t?
That catchy song is called an “earworm,” and the moment that you hear one playing on the radio, you won’t be able to stop thinking about it.
Not all songs are earworms, though, and music psychologist Kelly Jakubowski wanted to find out what made these songs stand out.
They were found to have faster and simpler melodies, with some unique intervals between notes.
Earworms are often prompted after hearing a song, as well as when you are in a positive or dreamy state of mind, or worried about having too much work to do.
People with musical backgrounds are especially prone to earworms.
You may try to block the song out, but it is better not to resist thinking about it.
In fact, such an attempt can result in what psychologist Daniel Wegner calls the “ironic process,” which is when resisting a tune makes your brain continuously repeat it over and over again.
