A Pyrrhic victory is a victory won at such great cost to the victor that it amounts to a virtual defeat.
The term comes from Pyrrhus, a Greek general whose army invaded Italy and attacked the Romans in 281 B.C.
Pyrrhus defeated the Roman army sent to fight him but suffered terrible losses in doing so.
“One more such victory and I am ruined,” he exclaimed.
The Battle of Borodino in 1812 is another classic example of a Pyrrhic victory.
Napoleon defeated the Russian army near Moscow, but the losses the French sustained were so great that the victory turned out to be a disaster that cost Napoleon his throne.
Today, the phrase is commonly used to describe situations in politics, corporate takeovers, expensive legal disputes, or even major sports competitions in which the side that appears to win eventually finds itself weakened, drained of resources, and strategically vulnerable.
