The human immune system consists of many different kinds of cells, organs, proteins, and tissues that all play unique roles in keeping us healthy.
Some of the most important roles are fulfilled by white blood cells known as lymphocytes, whose job is to identify and remember invading pathogens, including viruses and harmful bacteria.
One way for lymphocytes to do this is by identifying special markers called antigens on the surface of the pathogens and then producing antibodies that attach themselves to the antigens like a key into a lock.
By effectively marking the invaders in this way, other cells in the immune system can recognize and destroy them.
Through this identifying process, the lymphocytes are also able to remember the antigens so that the body can react to them more quickly the next time they are discovered.
