While many Americans might readily state that the Declaration of Independence was the most significant document published in 1776, others would argue that The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, a Scottish philosopher and pioneering economist, was more influential globally.
With this book, Smith’s goal was to overturn the mercantile system, the most popular economic theory at the time.
Governments practicing mercantilism believed that wealth was static and limited, and that the only way to prosper was to accumulate gold and tax imported goods.
This meant that countries would only export their products to other countries while purchasing nothing from them.
Unsurprisingly, nations started implementing an unending cycle of tariffs that obstructed foreign trade.
On the contrary, the core of Smith’s thesis proposed that when people work toward maximizing their own good through free trade, society also benefits.
Furthermore, he believed state interference in the economy was unnecessary because the “invisible hand” would know best.
