Although it is easy to think of history simply as what the world was like long ago, in reality it is something that we are all part of.
What we take for granted will surely seem bizarre to our children’s children.
“How strange it must have been to live so long ago,” they’ll likely say.
And, of course, although our ancestors lived very differently from the way we live now, they too undoubtedly saw their lives as “normal.”
History is the story of what happened in the past, but the record continues to be created as events of the present accumulate and gradually become part of the past.
So next time you read the news, think about the fact that some of those stories will be in history books someday.
It is interesting to look at our world from this perspective and try to imagine how today’s events may shape the lives of future generations and influence the world they will eventually inherit.
