The history of wine in Hungary goes back a very long time.
In fact, Hungarian is one of only three European languages that have words related to wine that are not derived from Latin.
Hungary’s climate and soil are perfect for growing grapes, and vines have been cultivated there since the days of the Roman Empire.
By the Middle Ages, Hungary had already been recognized as being an excellent location for winemaking.
Mention of a Hungarian wine called Tokaji can be found in documents dating from as early as the 16th century, and in the 17th century, the Tokaj region became famous for it, and it is still famous to this day.
Today, Hungary has 22 wine regions, each producing a unique style and flavor of wine depending on its microclimate.
Together, they produce roughly 370,000 to 400,000 tons of wine grapes a year, yielding around 2 to 3 million hectoliters of wine.
