In the early 1900s, wristwatches with glow-in-the-dark hands, which were made with paint that contained radioactive radium, were becoming increasingly popular.
To keep up with demand, the United States Radium Corporation hired thousands of young women to paint the watches.
Although the company’s managers were warned about the dangers of radium, they never informed the workers.
Having been assured that the radioactive paint was harmless, many of the women even used it to paint their fingernails and teeth, only to develop severe health problems.
One woman’s condition was so bad that she died within a month of having a rotting tooth pulled.
Eventually, five of the women decided to sue the company.
But because of continuous delays and the fact that they would soon face death from the radioactive contamination, they ended up reaching a settlement with the company.
However, the outrage and the media storm it produced had a huge impact, leading to improved industrial-safety laws and stronger legal protections for workers.
