The common expression that we “burn fat” during exercise often creates the misleading impression that fat simply disappears as heat.
In reality, fat loss is governed by a series of chemical reactions in which stored lipids are oxidized into smaller molecules.
When the body requires energy, triglycerides are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol, which then undergo further reactions involving oxygen.
Through these processes, most of the mass of fat is converted into carbon dioxide and water instead of being directly released as heat.
After this transformation, the carbon dioxide enters the blood stream and is transported to the lungs, where it is expelled from the body when we exhale.
Although heat is produced during the chemical reactions in the body, it accounts for only part of the energy released and is not the primary fate of the fat itself.
Thus, the phrase “burning fat” should be more accurately understood as a biochemical oxidation process in which the material is conserved, rearranged, and ultimately removed from the body.
