Tigers’ stripes are their camouflage, which for most animals serves to conceal them from predators.
However, tigers, the dominant hunters of their ecosystems, do not need protection.
Instead, they rely on their stripes to help them stalk their prey without being detected.
This works because many of the animals tigers hunt, such as deer and wild boar, have limited color vision.
They can neither see vivid colors nor discern differences between colors, so they have to rely more on detecting movement to escape predators.
For them, an orange tiger hiding in the green grass is barely noticeable.
The dark vertical stripes of the tiger break up the outline of the tiger’s body, making it difficult for the prey to recognize its shape.
This allows the tiger to get surprisingly close before launching a short, powerful attack.
It is due to this evolutionary advantage that tigers are such effective hunters.
