Researchers have recently discovered that the nest-building expertise of Botswana’s southern masked weaver is learned rather than an instinctive ability.
Dr. Patrick Walsh of Edinburgh University said of the study that there was “a clear role for experience” in the building of the nests.
The birds have different nest-building techniques which they vary from one nest to the next, and as their knowledge expands, they tend to make fewer mistakes.
Dr. Walsh pointed out that if nests were built the same way each time, it would be according to a sort of inbuilt blueprint, but the southern masked weavers vary their nests, improving the design each time.
