Many people assume that all colors come from pigments, which are substances that reflect light.
Unlike most things that have color, butterfly wings don’t contain any pigments.
Instead, their colors come from their structure.
Butterfly wings are made up of layers of tiny structures.
As light reflects and interferes within these layers, vivid colors are created.
Because of this, the colors can even change depending on the viewing angle.
Based on this principle, scientists have created their own colors by designing similar layered structures, some of which are as thin as a few atoms.
This concept helps developers create security features that prevent banknotes and cards from being copied.
Copying pigments is fairly easy, but recreating such complex structures remains a real challenge.
