Before coins and paper bills existed, people relied on bartering to get what they needed.
However, trading goods directly had clear limits, and finding someone who wanted exactly what they had to offer was often difficult.
This need led communities to adopt a single commodity that everyone would accept in exchange, and one of the most widely used goods was salt.
Its value came from the fact that it was produced in only a few regions and was therefore scarce enough to serve as a reliable medium of exchange.
Salt could also be stored for long periods without losing its quality.
This allowed it to be traded across long distances.
For these reasons, salt was one of the most commercially significant commodities of its time.
The English word “salary” itself derives from sal, the Latin word for salt, which reflects how important this commodity was to ancient economic life.
