The type of regret that we experience is divided into two categories: regret over actions we have taken and regret over opportunities we have missed.
Acting and making a poor choice can feel devastating because it causes intense guilt.
However, decades of research have shown that this type of regret fades relatively quickly.
The pain linked to a bad decision is softened as we find ways to justify or accept what we cannot change.
Regret over missed chances, on the other hand, tends to grow stronger over time.
When you avoid taking a risk or miss a chance to try something meaningful, the mind keeps returning to the question of what might have been.
With this type of regret, there is no clear result, so you cannot easily move on.
Studies have shown that people who never try to reach their goals tend to feel less happy over time than those who try and fail.
