The human body still shows small signs of our evolutionary past, even though some features have lost their original purpose.

인간의 몸은 여전히 우리의 진화적 과거의 작은 흔적들을 보여 주는데, 일부 특징들이 원래의 목적을 잃었음에도 불구하고 그러하다.

Structures such as the tailbone and the tiny muscles that cause goosebumps are examples of body parts that have largely lost their original functions.

꼬리뼈와 소름을 일으키는 작은 근육들과 같은 (신체) 구조들은 원래의 기능을 대체로 상실한 신체 부위의 예이다.

In earlier times, these traits had clear purposes.

과거에는 이러한 특징들이 명확한 목적을 가지고 있었다.

A tail helped with balance, and goosebumps caused body hair to rise, which helped keep the body warm and could also signal danger.

꼬리는 균형을 잡는 데 도움이 되었고, 소름은 체모를 곤두서게 만들어 체온을 유지하는 데 도움이 되었으며 위험의 신호를 보내기도 했다.

Over time, however, human lifestyles changed, and these functions became less necessary.

그러나 시간이 지남에 따라, 인간의 생활 방식이 변화하면서 이러한 기능들은 덜 필요하게 되었다.

Today, the tailbone plays only a minor role in supporting the body, and goosebumps no longer keep us warm because humans have far less body hair.

오늘날 꼬리뼈는 신체를 지탱하는 데 미미한 역할만을 하며, 인간의 체모가 훨씬 줄어들었기 때문에 소름은 더 이상 체온을 유지해 주지 않는다.

Yet even though it has been ages since they were truly necessary for human survival, they have not disappeared.

하지만 그것들이 인간의 생존에 진정으로 필요했던 때로부터 오랜 세월이 지났음에도 불구하고 그것들은 사라지지 않았다.

To this day, they are still typical features of the human body.

오늘날까지도, 이것들은 여전히 인간 몸의 전형적인 특징들이다.
