Have you ever wondered why marathon runners wrap themselves in silver blankets after races?

마라톤 선수들이 왜 경주를 마치고 은색 담요를 두르는지 궁금해한 적이 있는가?

Once they stop running, their body temperature drops, but those blankets help them control it.

마라톤 선수들이 달리는 것을 멈추면 체온이 떨어지지만, 그 담요는 그들이 체온을 조절하도록 돕는다.

The blankets were actually developed by NASA.

사실 그 담요는 나사에 의해 개발되었다.

In 1973, one of NASA’s space stations had a broken heat shield, and temperatures inside were approaching 54℃.

1973년, 나사의 우주 정거장 중 한 곳의 열 차단막이 고장 나서 내부 온도가 섭씨 54도에 육박했다.

To fix this, NASA created a shield that reflected the heat and allowed the spacecraft’s temperature to remain normal.

이를 수리하기 위해, 나사는 열을 반사하여 우주선 온도가 정상으로 유지되도록 하는 차단막을 만들었다.

The material they used also had the ability to keep heat in because it could reflect body heat back towards the body.

그들이 사용했던 재료는 체열을 신체 쪽으로 다시 반사할 수 있기 때문에 열을 보존하는 능력도 가지고 있었다.

This makes it invaluable to runners trying to stay warm after races.

이것은 경주를 마치고 따뜻함을 유지하려고 하는 마라톤 선수들에게 이 재료가 매우 유용한 것이 되게 한다.

Today, these emergency blankets are commonly found in first-aid kits around the world.

오늘날 이 비상 담요는 전 세계 구급함에서 흔히 볼 수 있다.
