According to American philosopher Harry Frankfurt, both humans and animals experience something called “first-order desires.”
These are basic impulses that direct us toward things we want to have or actions we want to perform.
When people and animals are feeling tired, for example, both desire sleep.
However, a distinct category of desire also exists that makes humans seem like tightrope walkers.
Frankfurt calls these “second-order desires,” which are essentially desires about our own desires.
Imagine you are sitting on a sofa, watching an exciting soccer match.
You want to watch the rest of the game, yet you want to resist this desire and go to sleep.
Frankfurt argues that such complex second-order desires exceed the cognitive capacities of animals.
Therefore, this capacity for self-reflection represents one of the key distinctions separating humans from other animals.
