Achieving cooperation can be difficult even when mutual benefit is clearly present.
This problem is illustrated by the concept known as the prisoner’s dilemma.
Imagine two individuals arrested for a crime and held in separate cells without communication.
Each prisoner faces two options: confession or silence.
From these options, the prisoners are given three possible outcomes.
In the first outcome, if one confesses and testifies against the other, who remains silent, it will lead to a reduced sentence for the confessor and severe punishment for the other.
In the second outcome, a moderate punishment will be given to both prisoners if they both confess.
In the third outcome, if both remain silent, both will be released because there is insufficient evidence, and this represents the most beneficial outcome.
However, this result is unlikely because fear of betrayal influences decisions.
Each prisoner expects the other to confess and therefore chooses confession.
As a result, the two prisoners will end up with punishments that could have been avoided if they had cooperated and both remained silent.
