Imagine you go for a walk in the middle of the night and get robbed.
When you tell people what happened, most of them will probably feel sorry for you.
Others, however, will say it was your fault for walking around alone in the dark.
This is called victim blaming.
But why do people engage in this kind of behavior?
Surprisingly, it makes them feel less vulnerable themselves.
If bad things can randomly happen to good people, then no one is safe.
This can be a terrifying idea.
On the other hand, if bad things are actually predictable consequences of our behavior, then we can control what happens to us.
Therefore, blaming the victim causes people to think that the world is a just place in which the good are safe from harm.
Unfortunately, this attitude reduces our empathy for people who have been victimized and can make their suffering even worse.
