When advocates of a policy have good intentions, people tend to think their proposals are sound.

어떤 정책의 지지자들이 좋은 의도를 가지고 있을 때, 사람들은 그들의 제안이 타당하다고 생각하는 경향이 있다.

However, this is not always true.

그러나 이것이 항상 사실인 것은 아니다.

Sometimes advocates don’t realize the negative side effects their proposals may cause.

The Endangered Species Act is an example of such a case.

「멸종위기종보호법」이 그러한 사례의 한 예이다.

Its objective is to protect species by regulating private land on which the species are found.

This is done against the will of landowners, who in turn attempt to maintain control of their property.

They do this by making their land less attractive to these species.

In the case of one endangered bird, this involves people cutting down any trees found on their land that the bird likes to nest in.

Thus, as an indirect result of this well-meaning policy, the natural habitats of endangered species can actually disappear at a faster rate.
