Kandovan is an ancient village in Iran.

칸도반은 이란에 있는 고대의 마을이다.

Not only is it famous for its natural beauty, but it is also considered unique due to the fact that many of its residents make their homes in caves.

그곳은 자연의 아름다움으로 유명할 뿐만 아니라, 주민 중 다수가 동굴 안에 거주한다는 사실 때문에 특이하다고 여겨진다.

Even more strangely, these caves are located inside cone-shaped rock formations.

더욱 이상한 것은, 이 동굴들이 원뿔 모양의 바위층 내부에 위치해 있다는 점이다.

Formed out of ash from a volcanic eruption, these unusual-looking structures were shaped by natural forces and resemble giant beehives.

화산 분출의 재로 만들어진 이 특이하게 생긴 구조물은 자연의 힘에 의해 형성되었고 거대한 벌집을 닮았다.

In fact, the word kando means “beehive,” which is widely believed to be how the village got its name.

사실, ‘kando’라는 단어는 ‘벌집’을 의미하는데, 이것이 그 마을이 이름을 얻게 된 방식이라고 널리 믿어진다.

According to legend, people first moved to this remote area in the 13th century to escape the invading Mongols.

전설에 따르면, 사람들은 13세기에 침략하는 몽골인들을 피하기 위해 이 외딴 지역으로 처음 이동했다.

At first, they hid in the rocks, but later they decided to settle in the caves.

처음에 그들은 바위들 속에 숨었지만, 나중에는 동굴 안에 정착하기로 결정했다.

Over time, these caves developed into multi-level homes, each inhabited by generations of the same family.

시간이 지나면서, 이 동굴들은 여러 층으로 된 집으로 발전했으며, 각 집에는 같은 가족의 여러 세대가 거주한다.

Kandovan is now a popular destination for tourists who are interested in its history and architecture.

칸도반은 이제 그 마을의 역사와 건축에 관심 있는 관광객들에게 인기 있는 여행지이다.
