Place names in the United States in the late 19th century were a disorganized mess.
Some states had up to five towns that shared the same name, which caused endless problems for the postal service.
Geographic features such as mountains and rivers often had more than one name.
For example, a mountain in California was called Cloud Peak by some people and Cuyamaca by others.
And many places had similar names that were simply spelled differently, such as Alleghany, Virginia, and Allegany, New York.
To put an end to this confusing situation, President Benjamin Harrison created the Board on Geographic Names in 1890.
Initially, the board wasn’t very effective.
It could make the government use certain names and spellings, but it had no way of making the American people do the same.
Over time, however, citizens began to follow the board’s decisions, whether they liked them or not.
