The factories and warehouses left over from the industrial age are usually unattractive buildings.

산업 시대로부터 남겨진 공장과 창고들은 대개 볼품없는 건물들이다.

This is because they were built simply for the practical purposes of manufacturing and storing goods.

이는 그것들이 상품을 제조하고 보관하는 실용적인 용도로만 지어졌기 때문이다.

Although many of these buildings have been abandoned and are in very poor condition, they remain structurally sound.

이러한 건물들 중 다수가 버려지고 매우 열악한 상태에 있지만, 그것들은 구조적으로 견고하게 남아 있다.

So why shouldn’t we adapt them for new uses?

그렇다면 왜 우리가 그것들을 새로운 용도로 개조하면 안 되는가?

This would be similar to how we recycle products nowadays.

이것은 요즈음 우리가 상품을 재활용하는 방식과 비슷할 것이다.

Tearing down an existing structure and putting up a new one is not as economical and eco-friendly as repurposing a building that’s already standing.

기존 구조물을 허물고 새로운 건물을 세우는 것은 이미 세워져 있는 건물을 다른 용도로 활용하는 것만큼 경제적이지도 않고 친환경적이지도 않다.

For example, if a town needs a new community center, it makes sense to convert one of these abandoned warehouses or factories into such a space.

예를 들어, 어떤 마을에 새 지역 문화 센터가 필요하다면, 이런 버려진 창고나 공장들 중 하나를 그런 공간으로 개조하는 것이 이치에 맞다.

Reusing existing structures in this way saves energy and materials.

이런 식으로 기존 구조물들을 재사용하는 것은 에너지와 자재를 절약한다.

Plus, it eliminates the waste created by demolishing old buildings.

게다가, 그것은 낡은 건물을 철거함으로써 발생하는 폐기물을 없애 준다.
