It seems like common sense for animals to try to get their food with as little effort as possible.
However, experiments sometimes reveal behavior inconsistent with this assumption.
One experiment conducted by psychologist Glen Jensen in 1963 gave rats two alternatives: they could eat food that was freely given to them in a dish, or they could obtain the same food themselves by pressing a lever.
Before the test, the rats were trained to press the lever 40, 80, 160, 320, 640, or 1280 times to receive food.
During the test, although the food in the dish was freely available, all but one rat pressed the lever at least once.
These results suggest that animals’ feeding choices may be influenced by factors such as curiosity or learned habits rather than simple energy conservation.
This tendency to work for food even when identical food is freely available is known as contrafreeloading.
