Sometimes a word begins to sound strange if it is repeated many times in a short period.
For instance, try repeating the word “apple” to yourself over and over again.
Before long, you may find that it starts to sound odd and becomes almost a meaningless noise.
This experience is called semantic satiation.
The phenomenon occurs as a result of temporary fatigue in the brain’s processing system.
When the same word is processed repeatedly, neural circuits related to that word’s meaning become highly activated within a short time.
To regulate excessive stimulation, the brain temporarily decreases the responsiveness of those circuits.
During this time, the connection between the sound and the meaning of the word may weaken.
So even though the sound reaches the listener’s ear, the meaning may not fully activate in their mind as clearly as before.
This suggests that meaning is not simply contained within words but is continuously produced through the brain’s ongoing cognitive activity during normal language processing in everyday communication.
