Laurence Stephen Lowry was an English artist.

Laurence Stephen Lowry

He worked as a rent collector and clerk, so he did most of his painting in the evening after his workday was over.

He is famous for painting pictures of the industrial areas of mid-20th century North West England.

He developed a unique style that often included crowds of stick-like human figures gathered around industrial buildings.

These figures are often referred to as “matchstick men.”

A large collection of his work is permanently on display in The Lowry, which is a gallery in Salford Quays that was named in his honor.

He was offered five British honors during his lifetime, including a knighthood in 1968, but he rejected all of them.
