Linda Alvarado was born in New Mexico in 1951 to a poor family with six children.

Linda Alvarado

She went to college on an academic scholarship, majoring in economics.

She worked for a landscaping company on campus as a part-time job.

After college, she began working in the construction industry but faced discrimination because she was a woman.

Despite this challenge, she started her own construction company in 1976.

Because banks would not give a business loan to a woman, her parents mortgaged their home and lent her some money to start her company.

Soon, her company became one of the most successful construction firms in America, building stadiums, hotels, and high-rise buildings.

In 1992, Alvarado bought the Colorado Rockies, becoming the first Latino, male or female, to own a Major League Baseball team.
