Many people believe that lying is something done only in unusual situations or by morally questionable individuals.
Most of us therefore think of ourselves as generally honest.
However, psychological research suggests a different picture.
In a study conducted by psychologist Bella DePaulo, participants recorded their daily conversations in a diary.
The results showed that people told one or two lies per day on average.
Most commonly, these lies were small exaggerations, polite expressions meant to soften feelings, or slight distortions used to avoid conflict.
Further research by DePaulo also found that people lie more often to people they don’t know well than they do to people they are close with, suggesting that people value being open and real in important relationships.
Interestingly, when lies are told to close friends, they tend to be kind in nature — meant to protect the other person’s feelings rather than to help oneself.
