Most people think growing healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, and nuts, is good for the environment.
However, this is not always the case.
Chilean avocados, for example, require large amounts of water.
It takes about 720 liters of water to grow just one kilogram of these avocados.
And shipping them around the world releases lots of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Almonds are another food that requires too much water.
It takes nearly four liters of water to grow a single almond.
And most of the world’s almonds are grown in the state of California, which already suffers severe droughts.
As these examples show, the environmental impact of our food choices is not always what we expect.
