Deciding on behalf of a group is never simple, especially when the members hold opposing views.
Imagine two people who must make a single collective choice even though each person prefers a different option and is unwilling to compromise.
There is no fixed rule that can settle the matter without favoring one side over the other.
The difficulty lies in satisfying two conditions at once.
These requirements are known as anonymity, which concerns the equal treatment of participants, and neutrality, which requires that there shouldn’t be a preference for either option from the start.
A deterministic procedure cannot preserve impartiality on both dimensions in a perfectly balanced case.
Yet it must still produce a single outcome, forcing a choice when the available information provides no impartial basis for selecting one option.
Random selection breaks this symmetry without assigning priority to either participant or option.
Even modern voting systems may use random selection to break ties when no clear winner emerges.
This practice has deep roots: in ancient Athens, many officials were chosen by lottery, a method widely seen as a defining feature of democratic governance.
