While it might sound strange, most scientific hypotheses lack the guarantee of absolute certainty.
Take this simple hypothesis as an example: “Any two objects dropped from the same height in a vacuum will hit the ground at the same time.”
If this were a false hypothesis, it would be quite easy to show that it was incorrect.
However, if it were true, how could you know this for certain?
Since it describes the behavior of “any two objects,” you would have to test every combination of objects in existence, a clearly impossible task.
Through extensive testing, you could gain a great deal of confidence in the hypothesis, but you could never be sure that it was an absolute truth.
There would always be a chance that the next pair of objects that you tested would behave in a manner inconsistent with the hypothesis.
In short, while a single counterexample is enough to disprove a hypothesis, confirming it as true could require an infinite number of tests.
