The Forer effect, which is also called the Barnum effect, refers to the tendency of people to believe that general statements apply specifically to them.
Horoscopes are a common example: although written for millions, they often seem to describe each reader personally.
Most people trust that they understand their own personalities quite well.
This assumption, however, was challenged by a psychologist named Bertram Forer.
In 1948, he conducted an experiment in which students took a personality test and were told they would each receive a personal assessment based on the results.
In reality, every student was given the same description composed of general statements such as “You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.”
When asked to rate the accuracy of their assessments on a scale from zero to five, the students gave an average rating of 4.26, despite the fact that the assessments had no connection to the test.
This suggests that people’s judgments about themselves are less sound than people generally assume.
