When speaking casually, people often use up to mean north and down to mean south.
However, geographically speaking, up refers to away from the center of the Earth into space, and down refers to toward the center of the Earth.
It is also important to understand up and down correctly in reference to river flow.
Rivers flow downhill from elevated sources to lower areas, where they eventually enter the sea.
The problem is that some people incorrectly equate up with north and therefore assume that all rivers originate in the north and flow down the map toward the south.
For example, they may think the Nile River flows from the Mediterranean Sea in the north into Africa in the south, when in fact it flows in the opposite direction.
This cognitive bias stems from the way we orient maps, with north always positioned at the top.
And it has led to the use of everyday language that creates a distorted view of physical reality.
