Once hammered into wood, a nail is held firmly in position by friction between its surface and the surrounding fibers.
If you try to pull apart two pieces of wood that have been nailed together, two forces act on the nail.
The wood fibers gripping the nail resist its removal, producing friction.
And at the same time, the nail is stretched lengthwise as the pieces separate.
This pulling force is known as tension.
The joint can therefore fail in one of two ways.
If the tension becomes too great, the nail itself may snap in half.
Alternatively, if friction is overcome, the nail slides out of the wood, leaving the pieces free to separate.
In practice, the second outcome is the one that matters.
The force required to break the nail is far greater than the friction holding it in place, so the nail is almost never the weak point.
It is the grip of the wood on the nail, or simply friction, that determines whether the joint holds.
