Most of us have had the experience of staying silent after someone has insulted or annoyed us.
We do this because we believe it is easier than confronting the other person.
In reality, however, it is not easier.
It allows us to temporarily avoid an uncomfortable situation, but there are consequences for silencing ourselves.
We end up feeling bad for a long time, knowing that we have taken away our own power and let someone else behave badly.
Further suppression of our feelings creates internal resentment over time and makes it even harder to speak up when the next conflict arises.
What we should do instead is to find a way to confront others constructively.
Learning how to do this gives us a useful tool.
We are able to stand up for ourselves and speak our mind without causing other people to become angry or aggressive.
