Despite the widespread use of genetically modified crops, the industry involves very high development costs.
The process of designing and testing these crops is long and expensive, which is why companies often obtain patents for them in order to secure long-term profits.
Such patents may raise seed prices, making seeds less affordable for small farmers in developing countries and, thereby, increasing economic inequality.
In addition to these concerns, some crops have been experimentally developed with traits that prevent reproduction after a single season, though such technology has seen limited commercial adoption due to public disapproval and regulatory pressure.
Critics also point out that some companies have strict legal agreements that limit the reuse of seeds.
These practices can require farmers to purchase new seeds each year, which raises concerns about ongoing financial pressure on small-scale farmers and the fairness of the global agricultural system.
Ultimately, balancing corporate intellectual property rights with the needs of global food security remains a critical challenge.
High development costs drive biotechnology firms to rely on legal protections to secure returns, yet these measures may impose a financial burden on small-scale farmers, heightening tensions over global food security.
