In modern society, narcissism is often mistaken for excessive self-love.

In reality, what appears to be self-love often functions as a defense mechanism protecting a fragile sense of self.

Narcissists construct an idealized image of who they wish to be and seek others’ recognition of it.

Their behavior is driven not by strength but by vulnerability.

그들의 행동은 강함이 아니라 취약함에서 비롯된 것이다.

Many of their characteristic actions can be understood in this light.

Narcissists dominate conversations because controlling attention helps reinforce the image they have created.

Their emphasis on visible achievements, such as wealth or status, provides external support for this constructed identity.

Because their self-concept is unstable, such challenges feel threatening, leading them to respond defensively or aggressively.

그들의 자아 개념이 불안정하기 때문에, 그러한 도전들은 위협적으로 느껴져 그들이 방어적으로 혹은 공격적으로 반응하게 한다.

Seen this way, narcissism proves to be nothing more than a fragile shield against an insecure self.

이렇게 보면, 나르시시즘은 불안한 자아를 막아 주는 취약한 방패에 지나지 않음이 드러난다.
