Schopenhauer compared human life to a pendulum swinging between the pain of unfulfilled desire and boredom.
He believed this movement explains why lasting happiness proves hard to achieve.
Desire, in his view, goes beyond being one feeling among many; it is a fundamental condition underlying human existence.
To desire something is to feel a lack, and this deep sense of lack generates persistent dissatisfaction.
We often assume that achieving our goals will bring lasting happiness.
However, once a desire is satisfied, the tension that once drove us forward dissolves.
Rather than permanent contentment, what comes next is boredom, a hollow state that follows what we mistook for fulfillment.
Without something to pursue, existence itself feels purposeless.
Boredom thus exposes a concealed truth: what we called happiness may have been nothing more than the temporary relief from wanting.
This gives rise to a repeated cycle.
Desire causes discomfort, satisfaction eliminates that discomfort, and boredom compels us to generate new desires.
Consequently, happiness appears only briefly, especially when a desire is on the verge of being fulfilled.
It cannot endure because the human mind instinctively seeks another object.
According to Schopenhauer, the problem lies less in our goals than in our dependence on desire itself.
So long as we depend on constant striving, we remain imprisoned between restlessness and boredom.
Happiness is thus reduced to a fleeting pause in an ongoing swing.
This inability to permanently secure happiness is not a personal failure, but a structural feature of human existence.
