Hydrogen gas is the primary component needed for star formation.
By studying galaxies and other star-forming regions throughout the universe, though, astronomers have found that there is less and less hydrogen available to create new stars.
Part of the problem is that most of the hydrogen originally present in the universe is effectively “locked up” in stars currently in existence.
When stars explode at the end of their life cycle, some of their hydrogen is released back into space.
However, this does not happen often enough to maintain a constant amount of available hydrogen.
In addition, as the universe expands, galaxies move farther apart, weakening the gravitational pull that draws in hydrogen from open space.
Consequently, this process will eventually slow down and may one day stop altogether.
These findings support the current theory that cosmological evolution will lead to an increasingly dark and cold universe.
