Why do people sometimes say exactly what they are trying hardest not to say?
Most assume such moments are just awkward accidents caused by nervousness or fatigue.
In The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, however, Sigmund Freud argued that these verbal mistakes are far from random.
According to Freud, they provide a window into the unconscious mind, revealing thoughts a person would prefer to keep hidden.
Consider a well-known example: a young woman at a job interview notices a large bandage on the interviewer’s nose.
Determined to leave a good impression, she promises herself not to mention it.
When she spots a rose on his desk, she tries to comment on it, but instead says, “Oh, my, what a nice nose.”
One might argue that this was merely a slip of the tongue.
Freud, however, would suggest that the slip revealed what she was consciously trying to suppress.
For Freud, moments like these were never simply accidents.
