Most of a spiral galaxy’s visible stars, gas, and dust are concentrated in a flat disk, and they rotate around the center in the same direction at hundreds of kilometers per second.
According to the laws of physics, stars at the edges of the disk should move more slowly than those near the center.
However, observations have revealed something surprising: the outer stars rotate much faster than expected based on the gravity of visible matter alone.
Astronomers explain this unexpected behavior by the presence of dark matter, an invisible substance surrounding the disk in a large halo.
Although it cannot be seen or measured directly, dark matter creates a strong gravitational pull that extends far beyond the visible disk, keeping the galaxy intact.
Without it, the outer stars would gradually drift away, and the familiar spiral shape could not exist.
Comparing visible matter with the unseen halo helps scientists to gain deeper insights into the true structure and mass of galaxies.
