Affective forecasting, the making of predictions about one’s own emotional reaction to a future event, is a skill at which humans do not generally excel in everyday decision-making contexts.
Daniel Gilbert, a member of the social psychology department at Harvard University, has shown in his research that humans are poor affective forecasters across a wide range of situations.
In fact, their predictions about how future events will make them feel often turn out to be completely inaccurate.
According to Gilbert, when we consider how our future emotional state will be affected by events such as elections, sporting events, movies, and major purchases, we tend to overestimate both the intensity and duration of our emotional reactions.
This means that what we anticipate will fill us with joy rarely does, while what we fear will emotionally devastate us typically causes less pain than expected.
This suggests that our emotional resilience is far greater than we tend to believe.
We frequently fail to accurately foresee how upcoming events will affect us emotionally, as we tend to overestimate how strong our reactions will be and how long they will last.
