One of the saddest and most costly mistakes in medical history occurred during the 1920s and 1930s, when attempts were made to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Researchers who investigated SIDS, a condition in which a baby inexplicably dies while sleeping, thought they had found the cause.
Upon examination, many of the deceased infants exhibited what was described as an enlarged thymus gland.
The thymus is located next to the trachea, and it was assumed that an excessively large thymus could block airflow to the lungs if there was pressure on a sleeping child’s throat.
So, doctors tried to shrink children’s thymuses by exposing them to high doses of radiation.
Unfortunately, later research revealed that the enlarged thymus theory had been based on a critical misunderstanding.
The thymuses that doctors considered “enlarged” were actually of normal size.
This error resulted in several thousand deaths from radiation-induced cancers over the next several decades.
