People catch a cold between two and five times a year on average, yet a cure remains out of reach.
A cold can result from any one of more than two hundred different viruses, each of which would require its own vaccine.
Many of these viruses also mutate frequently, so antibodies formed in one year may not recognize the same virus the following year.
Given these obstacles, one might assume that targeting the virus more precisely would be the answer.
However, there is a deeper complication that makes even this approach insufficient.
By the time symptoms appear, the body has already detected the virus and developed an immune response against the infection.
Many of the symptoms we experience from a cold are not directly caused by the virus itself but are products of this response.
Thus, even a perfect antiviral treatment might not fully relieve the symptoms people actually suffer from.
