When reading a science fiction novel, you would expect to come across many words and phrases borrowed from science itself.
공상 과학 소설을 읽을 때, 당신은 과학 그 자체에서 차용된 많은 단어들과 구절들을 발견하리라 예상할 것이다.
In certain cases, however, this process is reversed, and the field of science actually adopts the use of words that originated in the imaginations of novelists.
그러나 어떤 경우들에 있어서 이 과정은 반대로 이루어지며, 과학 분야는 소설가들의 상상에서 비롯된 단어들의 사용을 실제로 받아들인다.
The phrase “deep space,” for example, made its first appearance in E.E. Smith’s 1934 work Triplanetary and was used to describe the vast regions of empty space between stars.
예를 들어, ‘먼 우주 공간(심우주)’이라는 표현은 E.E. Smith의 1934년도 작 「은하계 방위군」에서 처음 등장했고, 별들 사이의 텅 비어 있는 거대한 공간을 묘사하기 위해 사용되었다.
These days, scientists use it to refer to any part of space that lies beyond our solar system.
요즘, 과학자들은 우리의 태양계 너머에 있는 우주의 어떤 부분이든 가리키기 위해 그것을 사용한다.
Another scientific term borrowed from a writer is “robotics,” which was coined by Isaac Asimov in a short story in 1941.
작가로부터 차용된 또 다른 과학 용어는 ‘로봇 공학’인데, 이것은 1941년에 한 단편 소설에서 Isaac Asimov(아이작 아시모프)에 의해 만들어졌다.
In this case, the meaning of the term is identical both in the story and in real life.
이 경우에, 그 용어의 의미는 소설에서와 실생활에서 모두 동일하다.
These examples prove that scientific terms are not always coined by actual scientists alone.
이 예시들은 과학 용어가 항상 실제 과학자들에 의해서만 만들어지는 것은 아님을 입증한다.
