People often face difficult moral decisions that affect not only themselves but others as well.

In such situations, deciding what is right can be challenging.

According to utilitarianism, an action is ethical if it maximizes total happiness while minimizing total pain.

The word “total” emphasizes that everyone’s happiness matters, not just that of particular individuals.

There are two branches of utilitarianism: act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism.

To understand the difference, imagine a court case in which a judge is deciding whether to send a criminal to prison.

The judge knows the man made a mistake and is unlikely to commit another crime.

Although freeing him may increase happiness, consistently enforcing the rules helps maintain trust in the legal system and preserve social order.
