Words like “fresh” and “natural” on food packaging lead consumers to think of healthy, minimally processed products.
Food companies are well aware of this tendency and use such terms strategically in their advertising.
However, the foods that carry these labels are often far removed from what these words traditionally mean.
A product described as “natural,” for example, may contain heavily processed ingredients that bear little resemblance to anything found in nature.
These redefined meanings better serve the needs of large-scale food production, which cannot supply products that match the original sense of these words.
One might expect consumers to recognize this gap eventually and reject such misleading language.
Yet the opposite has occurred: rather than questioning the food labels, shoppers have adjusted their expectations to the new definitions.
As a result, words that once pointed to real qualities now function as marketing tools, shaping the way products are perceived regardless of what they actually are.
