Questioning our own perceptions can lead to insights into the nature of truth.
Fiction writers sometimes make us do this by using unreliable narrators who create a lot of gray areas and force us to draw our own conclusions.
These narrators are unreliable because they mislead readers, either on purpose or by accident.
This may be due to their personal situations, flaws in their personalities, or psychological issues.
Unreliable narrators might conceal important information from readers or even tell lies to them.
Sometimes their unreliability is obvious from the start, and other times it is revealed as a surprise that changes the whole story.
In either case, these narrators are almost always complex and interesting.
More importantly, they keep readers involved in the story and motivate them to read more carefully in order to figure out what is actually going on.
As a result, readers are led not only to question the narrator’s account but also to reflect on the limits of their own interpretations.
