A terrifying article was published on the front page of the New York Herald on November 9, 1874.
It described how several dangerous animals had escaped from the city zoo.
According to the article, lions and rhinoceroses were running through the streets.
Army and police forces were fighting the beasts, but 27 people had already been killed, and the animals were still on the loose!
After people read this article, there was a huge panic in the city.
People grabbed guns and other weapons and went outside into the streets to defend their homes.
However, once they got there, they didn’t find any lions or rhinoceroses.
If they had finished reading the article, they would have seen the small note that explained the whole story was pure fiction.
The next day, the public learned that the article had been written by a reporter named Joseph Clarke.
Clarke said he had created the story to call attention to dangerous conditions at the New York City Zoo.
At first, he considered writing a simple article to criticize the zoo workers.
But his editor, Thomas Connery, decided it would be better to publish something that would grab more attention.
Both Clarke and Connery admitted that they were surprised the article got such a serious reaction.
However, despite the panic they had created, they refused to apologize.
Instead, they wrote a short statement for the next issue of the Herald that explained the zoo’s safety problems.
Needless to say, this didn’t make all those upset New Yorkers feel any better.
