Most people assume that pain is a fixed reaction to physical damage.
In their view, a major injury should always mean more pain, and a minor one should mean less.
However, research has shown that the situation in which we experience pain matters just as much as the injury itself.
In fact, a minor cut or a sore muscle that seemed bearable during the day may feel far more intense at night, when there is nothing else to focus on.
With no distractions to draw attention away, the brain has nothing to process but the pain itself, making it feel stronger than it actually is.
By contrast, when our attention is strongly focused on something else, the brain may ignore pain signals from reaching our awareness.
This is why athletes often do not notice their serious injury during a game until the competition ends.
These examples make it clear that pain is not shaped by the body alone but is strongly influenced by where attention is directed.
